Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are distinct, each with their own histories, languages, and musical traditions. Across the continent, music has been central to cultural life for tens of thousands of years. Here in the Brisbane region, on Turrbal and Yugara Country, song, rhythm, and ceremony have long guided community life, storytelling, and connection to place. These cultures have also endured and survived dispossession, displacement, violence, and many other hardships—maintaining strength, identity, and deep cultural knowledge despite these ongoing challenges.
Featuring releases across folk, country, gospel, rap, rock, and pop, this collection honours the stories, languages, and creative expression of the world’s oldest continuous cultures. Each title is offered with deep respect for the artists, their communities, and the cultural heritage they share through music. Our intention is to amplify these voices and allow the artists’ work to speak for itself.
We also recognise the importance of the physical objects that carry these recordings—the records, tapes, and discs that hold memory and meaning. In highlighting them, we hope they continue to be preserved, cared for, and passed on.
