Notes:
Recorded at ABC Studios, 301 Sydney, on 26 January 1990. This soundtrack was made for the film version of Black River, written and directed by Kevin Lucas. The film was produced by Lucas Produkzions with the BBC (UK), SVT Sweden, Film Australia, the Australian Film Finance Corporation, and Film Victoria. When the Sydney Metropolitan Opera first staged the work in 1989, Maroochy Barambah performed the role of Miriam. She was the first Aboriginal woman to appear on an operatic stage in Australia. Black River tells the story of Miriam, an Aboriginal woman held in a small country police station with a judge, a journalist, a policeman, and a local drunk as floodwaters rise around them. As the storm closes in, she speaks about the deaths of three generations of her family while under state control. Her story reveals the harm, bias, and failures built into the systems around her. The film mixes drama with Aboriginal dance to create a close, intense look at grief, strength, and the ongoing impact of deaths in custody.
