Tracks 1-10 to 1-18: Mixed at Motown Mix Room (Woodward Avenue), Detroit, MI, April 5, 1971. Previously unreleased.
Track 1-19: Mixed at Universal Mastering Studios-East, Edison, NJ, October 4, 2000. Previously unreleased.

Basic tracks for "What's Going On" recorded June 1, 1970. Lead & background voices overdubbed July 6, 7 and 10; strings recorded September 21, 1970.
Basic tracks for all other songs recorded in sequence March 17, 19, 20, 1971. Strings, horns and lead and background voices overdubbed March 24, 26-30, 1971.
Additional Marvin Gaye vocals and instrumentation overdubs for "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Right On", "Wholy Holy", "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" recorded in Los Angeles, CA, May 5, 1971.

Tracks 2-1 to 2-12: Mixed October 2000. Recorded at the Kennedy Center Auditorium, Washington, D.C., May 1, 1972. Previously unreleased.
Tracks 2-13 & 2-14: Originally released as A- and B-sides of single /master/170699Tamla T54201, January 20, 1971.
The musicians on track 2-14 may be similar as on the LP but may differ due to the earlier recording date.
Track 2-14: Basic tracks recorded January 20 and February 13, 1968. Marvin Gaye vocals overdubbed October 7, 1970.
Track 2-15: Originally released on /master/66676Tamla T54207F-B, flipside of "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", June 10, 1971. The musicians similar to the LP credits but some may differ due to the earlier recording date. Basic tracks recorded August 23, 1969. Strings added November 21, 1969. More instruments overdubbed September 18, 1970; lead & background voices and other overdubs recorded November 10 & 11, 1970.
The third single of the album, "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", was released on /master/203035Tamla T54209F, October 1971. Its flipside was "Wholy Holy".
Track 2-16: Mixed at Hitsville U.S.A., November 1970. Previously unreleased. Basic track recorded November 3, 1970; background voices were added the next day; lead & more background voices recorded November 6, 1970.

All studio performances on discs 1 & 2 were recorded in Detroit, MI at Motown's Studio A (Hitsville U.S.A.), Studio B (Golden World) and possibly at United Sound Studios. Los Angeles overdubs recorded at Sound Factory.

Digitally mastered from the original tapes using 96k/24-bit technology at Universal Mastering Studios-East.
Both mixes of the album were mastered from first-generation, stereo analog two-track tapes. Electric static in the Detroit mix of "God Is Love" could not be removed without compromising the audio quality. The "Rhythm & Strings Mix" and the live show were mixed to digital stereo from original 16-track analog reels. The single versions of "What's Going On" and "God Is Love" were mastered from the original full-track mono single masters. "Sad Tomorrows" was mastered in stereo from the original two-track master. (The single release used this stereo tape folded into mono). "Head Title" was mastered from a stereo, rough mix analog tape that suffered oxide damage through the years; dropouts you may hear are on the original tape.
