Stephen Stockwell – Pictures at a Sibling Rivalry Exhibition (Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Brisbane, Exhibition Catalogue Booklet) Brisbane 206

Official exhibition catalogue booklet produced by Woolloongabba Art Gallery for Pictures at a Sibling Rivalry Exhibition, a solo exhibition by Brisbane artist and activist Stephen Stockwell. Presented as part of the gallery's Sibling Rivalry exhibition program, the publication documents a body of conceptual artworks that draw upon language, politics, philosophy, media theory and social critique through brightly coloured text-based compositions and word-grid paintings. The catalogue accompanied an exhibition held at Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Brisbane, in May 2026, and reproduces numerous works exhibited during the presentation.

Stockwell is widely known within Brisbane's counter-cultural community through his longstanding association with independent broadcaster 4ZZZ, alongside his work as an academic, writer, political commentator and conceptual artist. His visual practice combines elements of concrete poetry, activist graphics, political language and experimental text art, transforming keywords, historical references and ideological concepts into densely layered visual compositions. Works reproduced within the catalogue include pieces such as Future Ideas and Ideology, Autonomy Attempt Zones, Existential Dread and Walter Benjamin Sager, reflecting recurring themes of democracy, autonomy, media, culture and contemporary social thought.

The booklet includes exhibition texts and full-colour reproductions of exhibited works, providing valuable contextual material beyond the exhibition itself. As a gallery publication, it serves as a lasting record of contemporary Brisbane art practice and Woolloongabba Art Gallery's ongoing support of independent Queensland artists operating across visual art, media and cultural activism.
