(P) LRC, Ltd. (C) 1997 Delta Music Inc. Los Angeles, CA 90025 Made in USA LaserLight Digital 17 138 is released under licence from LRC (Lester Recording Catalog). It's a complete reissue of LRC's 1990 CD "[r6496174" (CDC 9013), apart from a corrected spelling of track titles 1 & 7, and an updated list of involved musicians and their instrumental roles. Although the liners say that this release was recorded November 15-17, 1970, all tracks are actually selections from the Village Vanguard concert on April 28, 1967. Titles 1, 2, 4, 5 & 7 had already been released in 1967 on the Solid State LP SS 18016 "[r2050749". But these reissued tunes have longer track durations compared with those of the original album, due to the fact that (more) spoken introductions are included and longer applause appended. In addition, tunes 5 and 7 contain restored material edited out in their 1967 LP masters. Tracks 3 and 6 premiered in 1990 on the LRC CD. The CD track sequence neither represents order of performance, nor does it correspond with the orginal LP. Track durations as listed on the tray card of this release are mostly incorrect, compared with the values displayed by a CD-player: Track 1 is 8:19 (not 8:40) Track 2 is 10:47 (not 10:35) Track 3 is 10:31 (not 14:45) Track 4 is 5:36 (not 5:00) Track 5 is 8:54 (not 9:23) Track 6 is 5:02 (not 5:00) Track 7 is 8:26 (not 8:50) For the tracklist above durations from tray card have been replaced by the physical values. There are discrepancies between this CD and the original 1967 LP Solid State SS 18016 "[r=2050749" regarding the instrumental roles of several band members: Thad Jones (flugelhorn) is credited on CD card for playing (only) cornet. Jerome Richardson (alto and soprano saxophones) is falsely credited in the CD-liners for soloing on tenor sax (on track 2), contrary to the detailed 1967 liners, which explicitly say that he plays soprano in this piece. In addition, this CD credits him for also playing flute and clarinet. All uncredited instrumental roles and track composers are added from the original 1967 LP.
