This public performance recording was originally made in 1953 by the technical staff of Radiotelevisione Italiana, Rome.
For this LP version, copy tapes were prepared in Italy from the metal positives held in Radiotelevisione Italiana's Archives. These tapes were subsequently edited for LP side lengths. The basic sound of the original record was of variable quality but improvements have been effected at the EMI studios in London. While it is appreciated that the overall sound quality of this recording does not compare with today's standards, undoubtedly this great Furtwängler performance should be made generally available to record collectors the world over.
